ProSauce ARAM Discussion Topic - Week #1
Aura items are crucial in team fights. ARAM is one giant team fight. Ipso facto, aura items should always, always, ALWAYS be part of your team’s item builds in ARAM. For our first week’s article, we decided to examine the underutilized Will of the Ancients (WotA), the often ignored item that is secretly OP.
In general, WotA is just plain misunderstood. Typically, you only see people grabbing a WotA on straight AP builds with the idea that the spell-vamp only benefits its user and your fellow APCs. Very rarely do people realize how incredibly powerful its passive aura is. People think that the aura provides benefit only to AP teammates. The reality is, WotA offers incredible benefits to more teammates than just your fellow APCs.
1st. People forget that spell vamp does NOT only apply to magic damage abilities. It applies to every source of damage that is not classified as an auto-attack or an on-hit modifier. This means abilities like Darius R (Noxian Guillotine)and Caitlyn's R (Ace in the Hole) will both be affected by spell vamp but abilities like Gangplank's Q (Parrrley) or Teemo's E (Toxic Shot) will not be affected.
2nd. WotA gives everyone an extra 30 AP! That is 30x5 for a total of 150 AP for your team! This extra AP helps more than just your APCs. For example, this directly benefits those champions who may not usually build any AP but have very high AP scaling abilities such as Tryndamere, Gangplank, Miss Fortune, Tristana or Varus. So even if your teammates are building AD, the AP bonus they get from the passive (equal to 1.5x an Amplifying Tom) will provide some extra mmmph to their AP scaling abilities.
3rd. WotA builds from VERY cheap components with no cost of a single item or upgrade exceeding 585g. The affordability of each component means that even if you are having a tough game where you are dying more than you should be, you are able to slowly increase your damage output by buying the pieces as opposed to having to wait for the 860g for a Blasting Wand or the 1600g for a Needlessly Large Rod.
4th. WotA’s real total cost is actually less than 2550g, because it builds from a Kage’s Lucky Pick. In a typical ARAM game, you can’t expect to hold on to your Lucky Pick for the full 9.25 minutes to get your full money back, but you can expect to hold on to it for perhaps 2-4 minutes. Thus, the total value of the WotA drops by 200 to 300g, which is an 8-11% discount off WotA’s real total cost.
Ultimately, WotA's usefulness on a single champion depends on whether that champion will be around his team. Since ARAM is pretty much one giant team fight, WotA’s usefulness becomes unquestionable. Not only is it extremely cost effective, but its aura gives your team a huge advantage over the opposing team. So next time you are playing an ARAM, pick up the secretly OP WotA and enjoy the higher chance your team has of victory!
